this little theme all started because there was a commercial on SBS showing a gorgeous old girl, still with an 18 inch waist and ankles good enough to sport lace trimmed ankle socks jiving and dancing. she makes you want to get up and join her.
there are lots of songs and video clips and movies devoted to dancing. ifound some favourites today. I haven't bothered with
the music from the early tap dancing sessions along the river in
wendy cole's mother's sunroom. in fact i can't actually remember any music from those days. I only remember my mother telling my auntie kitty that i was not dance material. just as well I was thick
skinned.
but i certainly did feel different from the prancing skinny little girls with whom i danced. after all i was brought up on a very nutritious solid diet. so my father said. but many of the female brand of child endures dance lessons. we as mothers never seem to learn. although occasionally one young person sticks to it. in fact i feel guilty now as i know three of the latest generation who have "made it" a worthwhile occupation so to speak into their adult years. well i went straight from the heel toe heel toe tap to being the star of the school ball at aged just eleven.
we had moved out to the farm and i had transferred from my safe and proper school to a small local one. kids who did not pass the eleven plus exams stayed on at this school so suddenly i was mixing with older kids. star of the show so to speak. with an older boyfriend to boot.
one of the teachers had got hooked on the latest craze of square dancing and chose eight of us to demonstrate at the annual school ball. to parents and kids alike. oh me oh my. i was in my element. with my older boyfriend max as my partner i was the belle of the balle. in a beautiful smocked peasant blouse and full frilled skirt.

I guess my mum actually used a pattern like this as fashions stores were scarce after the second world war. well done mum. and maybe its time to give you a tune to dance to. please take note that these dancers are no longer eleven so please join in. this was the tune we square danced to at the ball in 1952.

well i diddled and danced my way through high school, dancing in the gym. as one did in those days. putting up with the progressive barn dances that went on for ever. refusing to go home with any boy who wore straight 8 hair oil like my brother, or californian poppy like those dreadful boys down the lane. went hip hopping in the country halls with my brother and his friends. sat silently and alone while they woofed their beers down in their utes outside.
the dance of life
so now to a real fast forward. when my friend sue and i were nineteen we hit the high spots on the mainland one christmas. my but our little tasmanian eyes were opened very wide. in melbourne the fashion was power house dancing. every where. no prides of erin, waltzes or progressive bloody barn dances. the place where it started, the POWER HOUSE, was always soooo packed you could only jiggle and wiggle in front of your partner. and so power house dancing it became everywhere.
surprise surprise. check out last years reunion! i tell you, we oldies don't lie down quietly.
